Women and Diabetes

Today marked the 26th commemoration of World Diabetes Day.

The theme of World Diabetes Day 2017 is Woman and Diabetes- Our Right to a healthy future.

The Day is observed primarily to promote;

  • the importance of affordable and equitable access for all women at risk for or living with diabetes to the essential diabetes medicines and technologies,
  • self-management education and information they require achieving optimal diabetes outcomes and strengthening their capacity to prevent type 2 diabetes.

According to International Diabetes Federation, diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally.

There are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes. This total is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040.

Dr Sauk said the theme Woman and Diabetes is fitting as women are the givers of life.

In PNG the Diabetes Association of PNG, together with its partners commemorated the day to remember those who have passed on and those battling the disease.

It also gives them the opportunity, as an NGO to embrace the opportunities the day presents to raise awareness and to strengthen their efforts in addressing the disease.

In commemoration of World Diabetes Day DAPNG has initiated a weeklong Free Screening at all NCD Urban Clinics, especially for pregnant mothers.

Different activities, all focused on prevention and awareness will be carried out till the end of this month
