PNG’s first ever dance class

PNG has a big dance community but it is mostly male dominated, says Sena Madla, one of the few known female dancers.

Madla has been dancing since childhood, coming from a family of entertainers.

But after a while of observation, the 32-year-old mother of three has come up with something new – Sasstematic.

Sasstematic production not only dances but offers Papua New Guinea’s first ever dance classes.

She has begun with dancehall – a fusion between reggae, R&B and hip-hop – originating from Jamaica.

In its third week now, Madla has seen a growing demand of people, mostly children, who want to dance and women who want to keep fit.

The classes are held every Sundays at the Murray Barracks gym in Port Moresby from 2pm to 4pm.

“We are slowly growing. We started with 16 in the first class and had 24 in the second class,” she said.

This is something new and while many may criticise the idea, Madla says we should be open to change.

“Come out, have some fresh air, dance a little and be fit. Dancing helps coordination with the body and muscles.

“Fitness is a downfall right now because we are too engrossed in our technologies. This is also a good bonding session for the family.”

Registrations are free. A form can be downloaded from the Facebook page Sasstematic. Per session is charged according to age class – children (4 – 12), intermediate (13 – 18) and adults (18 +).
