Bongre’s plight highlights poor health system

It always takes an unfortunate event to highlight critical issues.

And in the most recent case, three-year-old Bongre’s sad end to a two-year search for answer has once more shone light on the poor health system of the country.

Bongre’s story attracted public attention when it hit social media.

In fact, Simbu Children Foundation’s volunteer Michael Williams, who’s been directly involved with Bongre, says the toddler’s story touched more than 59,000 people around the world.

And it has gone to show how an innocent child’s life has been stolen by cancer, because the country still lacks special equipment.

“We should have MRI, Biopsy, CT scan in all four regions. This way, everybody has access and the chance for earlier detection, and wouldn’t have any problem,” he said.

“You can save the future - only through earlier detection.”

The appeal by another member of SCF, Michael Francis Konduagle, is for a boost in hospital facilities, including such equipment for cancer scanning.

Williams also said Bongre’s story brings light out of the people to show that the world is a caring world.

From the corporate and individual sponsors who stepped in to help in cash and kind, Williams acknowledges SCF, Greg Sheppard and team from the Young & William Lawyers, medical staff at Port Moresby General Hospital, Sir Joseph Nombri team in Goroka, doctors at the Pacific International Hospital, overseas doctors who screened the reports and tried to help and the general audience on social media.

“Bongre has had a tough fight. We tried a couple of options, but at this point, we cannot give false hope to anyone. I think, our journey has come to a halt here,” he said.

Bongre will remain at home where he will receive palliative care from SCF.
