Metal Fest to rock Port Moresby

The sixth of May is one to go down in the history of music in PNG.

Especially for Port Moresby, it will be a night dedicated to pure heavy metal music, a first of such.

And we’re talking seven local bands this time, according to organiser Carmel Pilotti.

“Black Ops is the headliner. They’ve played the biggest metal gig so far at the Pacific Games opening ceremony. That’s the first time heavy metal was played live to a mainstream crowd.

"Other bands include Hyer - this is renowned PNG guitarist Adrian Gedisa's heavy metal project. He was always a fan of heavy metal but never got the chance to play that type of music. He has a song "Falls Apart" on the radio featuring Sprigga Mek, who is also a fan of rock and heavy metal even though he is one of PNG's biggest local hip hop artists.

“The other bands are all local boys who are part of this underground music movement. They are; Skullet Aflame who played at Nakamania in 2012.

“Abide Till Death is a Christian heavy metal band - the metal project of John Warbat who also produces P2UIF at the White Haus Studios in Kokopo

“Other newer bands are Shadow's Lore and Dark Star and Aqua Fire who both played in the recent Battle of the Bands at The Cosmopolitan,” she said.

Pilotti, a full time journalist and heavy metal fan, is an active participant in the movement of PNG's underground heavy metal music scene.

Pursuing the dream to see metal music embraced by a wider population in the country, she started the company Tritones Music Promoters.

POM Metal Fest is the first project to be organised by Tritones and will be staged at The Sports Inn, home of live entertainment, on May 6.

“This is my first project and the metal brotherhood in Port Moresby is behind it.

“It's a hell of a lot of work but the Sports Inn is being really helpful and they get the biggest thanks for letting this happen at their venue. Most people would be nervous if they hear "heavy metal" but the Sports Inn seems really chill,” she said.

It may seem like a long wait from now, but just one month is nothing, compared to years the metal community have been waiting, for such an event.

Metal fans watch the Tritones Music Promoters Facebook page or the event POM Metal Fest for updates and tickets sales.
