Kanaka Outlaw: Hip hop crew throws pool party

It’s going “fire” today at the Taurama Aquatic centre in Port Moresby.

Kanaka Outlaw, a hip hop crew is throwing a pool party bringing out raw hip hop on street!

The crew of 6, backed by one of PNG’s hottest Disk Jockeys – DJ dirtyfingerz will keep it real.

“There will be rap battles, rap cyphers, basically just everything hip hop. PNG music industry has recycled music so we want to do something different for fun. It was initially planned for April 1 but due to another activity hosted on that day, we had to postpone it to now,” Desiz – the crew leader said.

Kanaka Outlaw is one of the many young crews in the underground hip hop movement.

“We use to take part in underground rap battles and then decided to form a crew together. So we met around 2014 and started off as a crew in 2015. Most of our songs like POM City Up are underground, haven’t been no the mainstream media,” Desiz said.

Understanding hip hop terms

Battle rap (also known as rap battling) is a type of rapping that includes bragging and boasting content. Battling can occur on recorded albums, though rap battles are often recited or freestyled spontaneously in live battles, "where MCs will perform on the same stage to see who has the better verses".

Freestyling is often done in a group setting called a "cypher" (or "cipher") or as part of a "freestyle battle". Due to the improvised nature of freestyle, meter and rhythm are usually more relaxed than in conventional rapping.
