Hiri Moale is here!

The Hiri Moale Festival is currently underway in Port Moresby.

The venue this year is at the Paga Hill ring road at down town Port Moresby.

Singsing groups are already in place warming up.

The festival commenced on Tuesday with the announcement of the contestants into the Hiri Hanenamo quest.

The quest is part of the festival where a young woman represents her Motuan heritage. Each year, a young woman is chosen as the Hiri queen.

This year, there are 18 contestants. The first judging also took place on Tuesday, where the contestants were judged on their knowledge of their traditional attire.

As tradition, the lagatoi (traditional motuan boat) set sail from Tatana village to Manu bada yesterday, Thursday.

Today it sails back to the festival venue, a modern day reenactment of the Hiri trade.

The Hiri Hanenamo contestants will undergo the final judging today, based on the confidence of their dance. Today's event also ties with the vanagi (canoe race). 

The festival tomorrow with more dancing and ends in the afternoon with the crowning of the Hiri Hanenamo queen.
