Task Force to spearhead voter registration

Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, has announced plans to establish a task Force to spearhead the voter registration system immediately after the 2017 Elections.

Addressing the media today in Port Moresby, Gamato announced the immediate plans to improve many discrepancies and problems related to the elections, particularly the electoral roll.

“Institute a Task Force with the primary responsibility of conducting a forensics assessment of voter roll,” he said.

“Take all necessary steps to initiate an active, continuous registration process under which all eligible voters, eligible citizens are legally obliged to make a claim for inclusion of their names under the electoral roll.”

Gamato added the Commission will reach out to the National Statistics Office through the National Identification Project, and the Civil Registry Authorities to join forces to introduce ID based voter enrollment.

And also to begin a new civic education campaign to explain to the citizens and PNG’s responsibilities regarding the voter enrollment process.

He said this will be done if successful negation with the government for funding is done.
