Meet me at the elections: Powi

Incumbent governor of Southern Highlands Province, William Powi has condemned media reports by opposing candidates who made defamatory remarks against him.

He has instructed his lawyers to file law suit against the media house and the candidate who made malicious statements against him.

Regional candidate for Southern Highlands,  Joseph Kobol in a media conference on Tuesday raised allegations against Powi on misuse of funds.

Kobol said he filed a complaint in 2013 stating alleged misuse of public funds intended for projects which never translated on ground.

The money, he says, is part of the K45 million break-up of petroleum funds allocated and released for Southern Highlands.

He said the money was budgeted but never used for the intended purpose. Instead, he alleges, that the funds were used in other activities.

Governor Powi today brushed aside these claims labelling them as “cheap politics”.

He said procurement for the alleged projects were done by the Central Tenders and Suppliers board and not him and the project is progressing in the province.

“Governor Powi does not issue contracts. Governor Powi does not make payments,’ he said.

He described Kobol’s attacks as shallow and dared him (Kobol) to meet him (Powi) at the elections and not to tarnish his reputation at the eve of elections.

“Go to elections and meet me there. I will see you in elections. No more cheap politics,” Powi added.

In the meantime, Police Commissioner Gari Baki warns candidates not to use such matters against other candidates during the election period.
