Media must be given full access: Police

Media must be given full access to the counting venues to maintain public confidence in the electoral process, says Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr.

“I will also be asking the returning officers that the media be given full access to give out correct information to the public so that they are kept abreast of what is happening in the counting room.

“This is so that the public is rest assured that things are being done transparently,” Wagambie Jnr said.

He also issued a warning to his personnel to maintain the integrity of the Royal PNG Constabulary.

Wagambie Jnr said only regular members will be deployed to counting venues to provide security during the count of the Lae Open, Nawaeb Open, Huon Gulf Open and Provincial Seat, which will be held in the city.

“Police reservist will be deployed to suburban stations to boost the numbers there and stand in for the regular members who will be used for counting.

“All hired vehicles used by police will have specific police signs on them to identify that police are using it.”

The Lae police boss says they have taken necessary steps to ensure that Police security operations are done to ensure public confidence in them.
