ENB polls: Two arrested for impersonation

Two individuals have been arrested for trying to use another person’s name to vote in the 2017 National Elections in East New Britain Province.

The first arrest was made on Monday when a man from Kaintiba, Morobe, tried to vote under a deceased’s name.

Polling team 20 at Tokiala Plantation, Gazelle Open Electorate, were on the ground when police were called in to arrest Lawrence Nondaseth, says provincial police boss Joseph Tabali.

Nondaseth was arrested and charged for impersonation by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The second incident occurred at Vunamami LLG, Kokopo district, under the watch of team 46.

“A woman, from Ialibu-Pangia, Southern Highlands Province, used a former resident’s name to cast her vote,” says Tabali.

“While casting her vote, she was identified by an individual who knew her by her real name. The matter was then reported to police.”

The woman and her male accomplice, from the same province and current residents of Kenabot 2, were both detained.

However, apart from these, and the Marmar village killing at the Bitapaka LLG, polling at the province was quiet.

“People from East New Britain are civilised people who respect the rule of law. Since day one of polling, only these three offences have been reported,” says the PPC.

The province started its 14 days of polling on June 24.
