Youths making community safe through sports

Youths from a settlement in Port Moresby are determined to make their community safe for everyone.

To achieve their objective, the youths of Talai settlement, Badili, decided to keep everyone busy by hosting a volleyball competition, which started on August 27.

“The idea is to minimise the number of petty crimes, law and order issues and alcohol abuse,” resident Jenny Auda tells Loop PNG.

“We had no idea they (youths) had volleyball skills until we witnessed it ourselves during the games. Therefore we have decided to build them up then enter them in town or suburb competitions.”

Spearheaded by Association patron Jimmy Mals Mara and the Upper Talai Volleyball Association executives, the leading eight teams will be battling for the top four spots in the competition.

“This weekend will be the preliminary finals,” says Auda.

The Upper Talai Volleyball Association consists of eight clubs, inclusive of both male and female teams. This adds up to a total of 16 teams in the competition.
