Walk the Talk to promote cancer awareness

As bold as the slogan states, this group’s passion is to do something constructive about the increasing rate of cancer and the lack of facilities to treat cancer in PNG.

Papua New Guinea has one of the highest rates of oral and cervical cancer in the world.

“Cancer remains a big challenge and a major concern in PNG and yet more emphasis and resources have been shifted to HIV/AIDS in the last two decades and rural families are the most affected.

“We are rising up as communities and organisations to do something constructive instead of talk only and waiting for actions from others,” the group states on their official Facebook page.

The main project here is to walk and raise funds to purchase LINEC &Cobalt machines, World class Pathology to test biopsies, and sponsor doctors to train to become oncologists.

This will see a seven days walk (November 13 – 19) from Goroka to Kundiawa over the Kuralba Range, covering awareness for people living along the route on the issues of Health, lack of Cancer treatment facilities in country, climate change, HIV/AIDS, Gender Based Violence and Spot medical checks and treatment by the accompanying medical staff that will walk with the Team.

There will also be a corporate fundraising dinner in Port Moresby in December 2016.

Despite being formed only in June 26, Walk the Talk Against Cancer has quickly attracted attention from both private and government sector, given its determination to achieve its goal.

“We hope that from the Money we raise, Goroka Hospital and the North Goroka Catholic Health Service Facilities will be upgraded and equipped to service Eastern Highlands and the Momase Region, while the upgraded facilities in Sir Joseph Nombri Hospital in Kundiawa and Mingende Rural Hospital in Simbu will be able to service the other Highlands Provinces to the West of the Highlands Region (Jiwaka, WHP, SHP, ENGA, HELA).
