Waigani market Burns as soldiers and police fight

A fire was started at the Waigani market as police tried to calm a rowdy crowd in the area earlier tonight.

Police station Commander Micha Yosman told PNG Loop that the fire was a result of crowds reacting to an attack by police at his station by a group of soldiers.

Yosman said ten soldiers fronted up in civilian clothes in an unmarked ten seater.

The soldiers were supposed to have picked up compensation payment from police at the station in relation to a confrontation last week.

The soldiers bashed up three duty policemen before being chased off by crowds and other policemen.

Yosman said the area is now quiet but tense and two policemen are in hospital.

For now NCD Superintendent of Operations Philip Kulwaum says he will need to be briefed but he has made contact with the commanding officer of the soldiers who are allegedly based at the Taurama Barracks.

Details are still sketchy at this time as NCD Police wait to speak with their military counterparts.

More to comeā€¦.
