UPNG staff and management work to avoid jeopardizing semester

The National Academic Staff Association (NASA) and management of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will work together to address the outstanding 7.5 back payment for staff.

NASA president Emmanuel Gorea said they will work as a team to avoid jeopardizing this semester.

NASA had given September 30 deadline ultimatum for the university management to give a feedback on the outstanding 7.5 percent back payment.

Gorea explained that if their demands are not met, the resumption of second semester maybe in jeopardy, possible boycott of exams and industrial action as a final action for the claim.

Following a meeting today with vice chancellor Professor Albert Mellam, Gorea said they are pleased to be collaborating together with the administration to address the issue.

The staff were told by Mellam that the issue will be addressed by the management and that the Prime Minister is also aware.

Gorea said the ultimatum deadline is a strategy to inform the management and the Government that this is what they will do if what they are asking for is not given to them.

“Semester two might be in jeopardy but we are going to work as a team in terms of moving towards that timeline.

“If the timeline is not achieved then we will resolve to take action.

“Part of the due process of the administration is that we must alert the administration on what we are doing so it becomes a transparent matter rather than an isolated hidden issue,” Gorea said.
