The University of Papua New Guinea’s Student Representative Council president has conveyed his sympathies to families and friends of the late Graham Romanong.
The University of Technology student was killed in his room during an attack on the campus last Saturday.
“Firstly, on behalf of the UPNG students, I wish to convey my sincerest condolence to the families, friends, relatives and loved ones of late Graham Romanong. His death is a great loss to our nation, to the people of Southern Highlands Province and Mendi,” Kenneth Rapa said in a statement.
“On behalf of the student body of UPNG, I condemn the killing of this young man. The manner in which he was killed is regrettable and should not be tolerated in our society.
“We will not allow the actions of a few individuals who allowed rage, anger and malice to control them to defeat the true purpose of our peaceful protest to be a voice for a silent majority; to stand up for what is right and just.”
Rapa said he was saddened by the events of Thursday, June 23rd, and Friday, June 24, at the UPNG Waigani campus.
He condemned the burning of the Uni Force Security vehicles and the University Printery Building.
“That does not reflect maturity, professionalism and diplomacy that we have fought peacefully for almost 8 weeks.
“I urge you the students, not only of UPNG, that those who seek to kindle the flames of violence, that the smoke that arises from its fires do not only blacken and mar the person whom it is intended for but also the person who ignites such flames.
“Our duty to do what is right and to stand for it is founded on Christian virtues and values and hinges on moral obligations. That is what I have maintained as a leader and still maintain now. If we have any fears and frustrations let us channel them properly so as to save those who oppose us, ourselves and our nation.”
