Twitter might axe 140 character limit

Twitter's 140-character limit on general messages could soon be over.

The social media giant is currently mulling the introduction of a product that will end character restrictions that have become Twitter's trademark, according to Recode.

While Twitter is officially staying tight-lipped at the moment, unnamed officials told the website that interim Jack Dorsey sees the policy change as a way to freshen up the tech leader.

If enacted, the move would echo Twitter's decision to lift the 140-character restriction for private messaging in August.

At the time, Twitter product manager Sachin Agarwal insisted that easing the direct messaging limit would not impact "the public side of Twitter".

"You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter. In a word, nothing," Agarwal vowed two months ago.

"Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today, rich with commentary as well as photos, videos, links, Vines, gifs, and emoji. So, start working on those sonnets."

The 140-character limit for tweets was originally instituted to comply with SMS messaging compatibility.

Earlier in September, Twitter enacted another major service tweak by allowing some users to publish polls on a trial basis.
