Tasion Police Barracks residents facing health risk: Turi

Port Moresby police boss Ben Turi is calling on responsible authorities to fix the sewage problem that has become a health risk for his personnel and their families.

Residents of Tasion Police Barracks this morning blocked off the new four-lane road that runs beside their houses. They want the National Capital District Commission to build their new houses and relocate them in line with an agreement reached in 2014. They will allow work to continue at their area after that.

The new four-lane road links Gerehu to Nine-Mile.

“The construction that took place in the barracks (but the contractor) did not consider this sewage problem,” NCD metropolitan superintendent Turi said.

“For the last 10 months we have been living like this.

“All we want is for the immediate houses to build, fix sewerage and build proper drainage.”

Meanwhile, a policeman’s wife Janet Ben said they did not experience this when they moved into the new houses in 1997.

She added that she was admitted to the hospital last week Thursday because of coughing and claimed she must have gotten it from dust from the area.

A working committee representing the residents said they have given their petition to the National Capital District Commission and the contractor this morning.

However, NCD Governor Powes Parkop told Loop PNG today that: “I am not aware of their (residents’) concerns until now (when informed by Loop).”
