Tabar hands over Higher Education Ministerial portfolio to Marus

Outgoing Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Malakai Tabar, has handed over the ministerial portfolio today to incoming Minister and Talasea MP, Francis Marus.

Tabar acknowledged the O'Neill government for having the confidence by allowing him to hold onto the portfolio two years.

During his short term in serving the HERST Department, despite the challenges of resourcing, access, equity and quality, he is pleased to highlight a few achievements under his leadership.

These include the passing and adopting of the Higher Education Act 2014, completion and launching of the National Higher and Technical Education Plan 2015-2024, launching of the DHERST Corporate Plan 2015-2017 and accreditation of new higher education institutions.

"As the outgoing minister, I share the pride of these achievements with the secretary, Professor David Kavanamur, and his loyal dedicated staff and stakeholders.

"To my colleague Minister Marus, I am confident that you will be accorded the same undivided support I was given during my term, from the staff, all stakeholders, service providers and the seven universities and 34 recognised institutions.

"The 2016 academic year has been a difficult year for us all but I am sure you will find a way to work with the universities, students and stakeholders to recommence the academic programs," Tabar told Marus when addressing those present during the handover ceremony.

The event was attended by the chancellors and vice-chancellors of the seven universities.

Marus thanked Tabar for his leadership and for bringing the HERST this far. He looks forward to working closely with the staff and institutions and build productive relationships.

Marus will now take over the portfolio for the remaining nine months.
