Supreme Court issued directions for cases on fast track list

A total of 38 matters have been listed on the Supreme Fast Track list before Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia.

Sir Salamo in presiding over the cases yesterday (Feb 12) said he wants to see the time spent by counsels in preparing draft index books cut down so the matters can be expedited.

He said there are too many delays in the cases that money is being wasted and counsels should work on getting to have the substantive issue resolved quickly.

They include the matter of the controversial UBS loan that was filed before the High Court by Don Polye, now the Opposition Leader against the borrowing of K3 billion loan from the bank of Switzerland.

Prime Minister Peter ONeill, the state, Oil Search and the bank of Switzerland AG Australian Branch are respondents.

The matter came for directions before Sir Salamo on Friday where Loani Henao who is acting for Polye appeared.

It will return next week for further directions while Polye is expected to prepare and submit to court a draft index.

The case of Vanimo Green MP Belden Namah against the Tribunal, the Public Prosecutor and the Ombudsman Commission was also on the fast track list.

This is the case of Namah having questions that require Supreme Court interpretation of the Constitution over the appointment of his leadership tribunal inquiry.

That matter is also expected back in court next week for further directions.
