Students to improve writing with spelling bee competition

Primary school students in the National Capital District will participate in a Spelling Bee Championship aimed to help them improve their writing skills.

The competition is an initiative of the Emstret School Competition Program (ESCP) and is scheduled from September 12-16.

The program aims to promote literacy, self-expression and talent through the art of public speaking, poetry writing and recitals and improve vocabulary skills for students throughout the country.

Students will compete against other competitors from other schools to spell a broad selection of words.

Each participating school is to select twelve competitors to represent their school with a total of 64 students expected to take part.

Emstret director Vani Nades said the students are excited about this event.

Nades said everyone wants to take part but it’s only limited to a number of participants.

“Today children are unable to spell properly so these are the things we need to start now so they can be able to learn to use their words and spell them properly,” she said.

The competition will comprise of three categories. The junior category is from Grades 3-4, intermediate is from Grades 5-6 and senior is Grades 7-8.

From each category competitors will be eliminated and those with the highest score advance to the next level.
