Students get new classroom after 18 years

After 18 years of being taught in bush material classrooms, the students of Wediru elementary in the Nawaeb district of the Morobe Province now have a new double classroom worth K167, 000.

This was made possible through a partnership between Digicel PNG Foundation and Member for Nawaeb, Gisuwat Siniwin who provided counterpart funding of K80, 000 for the classroom.

The classroom has 40 student desks, 3 teacher’s desks, chairs, solar lighting, a 5000 litre water tank and 2 ventilation improved piping pit toilets.

Wediru is a level 2 Lutheran church agency elementary school established in 1999. It enrols about 95 students and is a feeder school to the nearest primary school, Busong.

Digicel PNG Foundation chief executive officer Beatrice Mahuru said the foundation since its beginnings 7 years ago had seen how a new classroom could transform a school and uplift its students, teachers and the community to pursue education.

“We are humbled by the show of appreciation from the Wediru community and encourage all the students and teachers to use the infrastructure and nurture the ambitions of the students,” said Mahuru.
