Students’ judicial review case adjourned

The UPNG students and SRC judicial review case was adjourned to next month due to a no-show this morning at the Waigani National Court by their lawyer.

The National Court on June 1 granted leave to the students to apply for judicial review over the university’s council on May 24, which ordered the students to vacate campus within 24 hours.

The matter returned before Justice Collin Makail this morning however, lawyer for the plaintiffs (students), Laken Lepatu Aigilo, was not present in court today.

The matter is now adjourned to July 18.

In granting leave to the Student Representative Council on June 1, Justice Makail was satisfied that the SRC had sufficient interest in this case as it affected their welfare on campus and that SRC had the necessary standing to file this case on behalf of the student body.

Meanwhile, the students are also expected back in court after lunch today for another proceeding filed under the Human Rights track.

The application was adjourned from yesterday to 4pm today.
