Street and music festival set for Independence celebration

The streets of Paga Hill ring road in Port Moresby will come alive with dance and music to mark Papua New Guinea’s 41st Independence Anniversary.

The first ever Street and Music Festival, from Sept 15-17, is a celebration of PNG arts and culture and will also showcase traditional dance groups, break dancers, acrobats, singers and jazz bands.

The festival supports Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and upcoming local talents.

They’ll be a lot of arts and craft as well including painting and graffiti art with traditional food available for sale.

The official part of the street festival will be a parade by schools in NCD and the police and CIS.

They’ll march from Kone Oval to Paga Hill ring road where the stage is set and this is when NCD Governor Powes Parkop will give his Independence address.

Entry is free and open to residents of Moresby.

Organiser Sylvia Pascoe of Pascoe Promotion incites the public to witness this event.

They’ll be a lot of the stalls that will be set up mostly for awareness purposes and various different types of projects.

“Bring your family down and support the local sellers and enjoy the atmosphere with a lot of color, fun, music, dance and great food.

“That’s all part of the experience of Independence Day, getting to see something old and new but appreciating everything in that context.

Parkop hopes the public will embrace this event and make it a success as this is the first time the city will host such an event.

He said the aim is to also bring people together as a community and as a city to celebrate PNG’s Independence.
