State will give man K151,000 for accident

The Waigani National Court has awarded a man over K151,000 damages for personal injuries after he was injured in a motor vehicle accident in 2004.

Justice Nicholas Kirriwom awarded Jackson Kunis a sum of K124,821 with 8 percent interest (K27,002), totaling K151,823 for his injuries.

The car he was traveling in ran into another vehicle, driven by an employee of the Correctional Service. He sustained fractures to his right leg and a heavy blow to his head as a result of the collision.

The vehicle Kunis ran into was a Toyota Land Cruiser with a government vehicle registration and driven by Peter Warea.

The Waigani National Court said the fracture was such that one fractured bone pillar stuck out of the skin while his ankle and foot were dangling by a strip of flesh from the rest of his leg.

The state did not enter any appearance in this matter, nor did it file any defense resulting in default judgment and trial for assessment for damages.

A medical review done with a bone specialist in Port Moresby diagnosed Kunis’ loss as 80-90 percent loss of efficient use of his right leg.
