State ordered to make funds available for jail

The State has been ordered by the National Court to make available funds to service providers at the Lakiemata Correction center following Justice David Canning’s visit on Monday (August 24).

Justice Cannings issued the orders from Kimbe on Tuesday (August 25) for the Secretary for Finance and the Secretary of Treasury to make available K400, 000 to four authorities.

He ordered for K100, 000 to be made available to the West New Britain Provincial Government, K50,000 to the Kimbe General Hospital, K150,000 to Water PNG and K100,000 to the Correctional service who will then work towards ensuring prisoners at Lakiemata have access to free flowing water.

He also ordered the Secretary for Treasury to appear in person or have his legal representatives assist the court in ensuring full compliance of the orders.

Legal representatives from the West New Britain Provincial Government, Kimbe General Hospital, Water PNG and the Correctional service have also been ordered to appear and assist the court on September 1st at the Waigani National Court.
