Speaker rejects Opposition anti-PM move

Acting Speaker Aide Ganasi today rejected the notice of a vote of no confidence filed yesterday by the Opposition.

Ganasi made this announcement as the first order of business this morning.

He says the notice was not deliberated on by the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Private Business because most of the members were unavailable for a meeting.

He says section 23 subsection 4 gives him powers to determine the notice in the absence of the committee.

Ganasi says the notice was defective and therefore he rejected it.

After this announcement the leader of government business James Marape was asked to make a statement.

At this point all members of the Opposition walked out of the chambers.

Marape made a general statement about the achievements of the government and then moved a motion for a vote of confidence in  the Prime Minister Peter ONeill.

The motion was successful with 78 MPs voting for him and 2 against.

Oro Governor Gary Juffa and Goilala MP William Samb voted against.
