Sepik Economic Zone project to be launched

The launching of the K55 million Sepik chicken, grain and cocoa innovation project will be launched by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill tomorrow.

The project will be located at the Sepik Plain Special Economic Zone area in the Yangoru-Saussia district. The official launch will take place at Yangoru Station.

Yangoru-Saussia MP Richard Maru during the official signing early this month said the project will create huge financial opportunities for his people.

The agreement signing was done by Kumul Consolidated Holdings and developer Innovative Agro Industry Ltd earlier in Port Moresby.

“It will create jobs for thousands of small outgrower farmers who will grow chicken to sell to the factory and also corn and cassava to make stock feeds,” Maru said.

“Our Government, since we took office, is very clear we need to build a sustainable economy, an economy that not only depends on gold, oil and copper.”

Maru, who is also the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, said the Sepik Plain area covers 500,000 hectares of flat grasslands and is the largest unused agricultural land in the country.
