Security beefed up at UPNG’s main Waigani campus

Security at the University of Papua New Guinea’s main Waigani campus has been beefed up. Entry into the university is strictly through ID cards, transcripts or registration forms.

Loop PNG was on site yesterday morning to witness groups of students forming outside the barrier next to the Uniforce Security base, arguing with the guards stationed there.

Some of the students told Loop PNG that they have not been issued ID cards.

“We have been waiting since beginning of this semester to get an ID card. The IT office kept on delaying until the boycott happened.

“It took us 5-10 minutes to argue our way through. We showed our transcripts but the guards refused to accept it.”

Family members or friends who came to see students off were also not permitted beyond the inspection point manned by the Uniforce and Guard Dog Security personnel.

Meanwhile, registration will continue today where students will take their signed resumption forms to their respective school offices.

“Bring the form to the school office in person and have it signed by the executive officer,” advised the School of Natural and Physical Sciences.

“You then take the form to Student Services and have the officers process your forms to complete the process.”

Classes are scheduled to start next Monday (September 5).
