Security for APEC 2018 well into advanced planning stage

Security for the 2018 APEC Leaders’ Summit to be hosted in Port Moresby is well into its advanced planning stage.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki assures the world and the people of Papua New Guinea that this country is prepared to host APEC in terms of safety and security.

Baki said this week that the efforts of both the Royal PNG Constabulary (RPNGC) and the PNG Defence Force, supported by the Correctional Services PNG, are recognised.

He said security for the APEC event is paramount and they’re at the stage now where planning is well into the aspects of building their capabilities.

“We are looking at the existing gaps that we need to build up and we are also looking at our international partners that can come in to assist us.

“We are looking at what can be drawn into the legislation that’s going to go before Parliament to support our efforts in ensuring that security is provided at the highest level,” Baki said.

The safety and security operations ccover 26 government agencies including Police, Defence, Correctional Service, Health, NAQIA, Transport and Foreign Affairs.

The massive security operation will cover the entire mode of transportation, law and order situation in the country, possible threats from terrorists and movement of people throughout the country.

The APEC 2018 Committee on Safety and Security (COSS) this week launched the Operation Order (OPORD) for the upcoming leaders’ summit.

Bilateral partners that will assist in the security operation include Australia, New Zealand, United States, Indonesia and Malaysia.
