Madang town came to a standstill this morning as rumours of a clash between the Western Highlanders and Sepiks broke out at New Town.
The town was on lock down, traffic came to a stop and stores and businesses in town were closed all day.
Madang Provincial Police Commander Jacob Singura confirmed this and says police have taken control of the fighting crowd and warned people travelling in and out of Madang to take precautions while travelling. The situation is still tense in the province but police are monitoring.
PPC Singura says there will be a Law and Order Committee meeting this afternoon to talk about how best the situation can be controlled and hopefully come up with a compromised resolution with both groups.
No reason was given for the clash which has been subdued by police.
