Rio 2016: Greg Rutherford freezing sperm as Zika virus precaution

British long jump Olympic champion Greg Rutherford has had his sperm frozen as a precaution against the Zika virus threat hanging over the Rio Olympics.

Rutherford's partner Susie Verrill told Standard Issue magazine that they harbour serious concerns over the virus, which experts say is to blame for a surge of cases in Latin America of microcephaly - a serious birth defect in which babies are born with unusually small heads and brains.

The pair, who want to have more children, are as a result taking precautions ahead of Rutherford's defence of his long jump gold medal.

"We've ... made the decision to have Greg's sperm frozen," Verrill said.

"We'd love to have more children and with research in its infancy, I wouldn't want to put myself in a situation which could have been prevented.

"Specialists still also don't know the ins and outs of Zika, so even though it looks as though there's no real issues should [their son] Milo get bitten, it's just another thing we don't want to chance."

She says the Zika threat, as well as the fact baby-friendly accommodation in Rio was "slimmer than a supermodel grasshopper", will see her and the family stay at home during the Olympics.

"The Zika news has caused no end of concern if we're totally honest," she said.
