Rikis: Handwashing must become a habit

Water Aid ambassador and national netball representative Lua Rikis has encouraged children to make handwashing a habit.

Rikis said for handwashing to be effective, it must be practiced consistently at key times, such as after using the toilet or before contact with food.

Rikis educated the kids during a handwashing activity today in Port Moresby to mark Global Handwashing Day (GHD) which is celebrated on October 15 every year.

GHD is designed to support a global and local culture of handwashing with soap and raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap.

In line with this year’s theme “Make Handwashing a Habit,” Rikis told the kids that handwashing must become a habit and they must to practice it every time.

“It’s very cheap and you just need soap and water to wash your hands.

“When you play with pets and if you touch rubbish you need to wash your hands as well.”

Rikis hopes that the kids remember this message and take back to their homes and share it with their younger sisters and brothers.
