Ramu NiCo success in Madang opens pathway to go global

THE SUCCESS of Ramu NiCo Project in Madang Province and PNG has provided the Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) with valuable experience to develop overseas markets and explore a well-trodden path for China’s enterprises to “go global”.

President of Ramu NiCo Management Ltd, Wang Jicheng announced  on Thursday,September 8when sharing his Company’s experience at the Madang Investment Summit staged at the Madang Resort Hotel. 

Wang said the success of Ramu NiCo Project is because of the fact that the company had approached a new path of development and operation from Kurumbukari Mine to Basamuk Refinery. This is different from the initial approach established by its joint-venture partner Highlands Pacific Limited in its feasibility study. 

He further stated that comparing with Ramu NiCo’s improved management system over the years, the consumption process cost have been low over the years with improved output,  although the commodity price is low.

“Today, we are delighted to see Ramu NiCo as an international project that has proudly established itself as a world-class joint venture integrating laterite mining, beneficiation and refining after having overcome various difficulties and challenges.” Wang said.

He said that Ramu NiCo as the biggest investment by Chinese enterprises in the South Pacific region and the largest overseas investment on mineral resources by, RamuNiCo Project is a significant milestone for MCC on its path of developing overseas market. 

Wang clarified that the achievements did not come easy. Ramu NiCo was faced with many challenges including technical, financial, management challenges, topography challenges and social security issues. It was also faced with poor infrastructures  as its mine and refinery sites are located in some of the challenging landscapes in PNG. 

“Today, we are operating above 95 percent design capacity and by the end of this year, we hope to achieve full 100 percent design capacity.” Wang said.

He said Ramu NiCo as one of the major international investors in Madang province, it sees that investment summit as very important as PNG and Madang have a lot of potential to explore.
