Pundari calls for investment in green technology

Minister for Environment Conservation and Climate Change John Pundari has called for investment in green technology to tackle global warming and climate change.

Green technology or clean technology is a term used to describe sustainable energy generation technologies such as photovoltaics, wind turbines and bioreactors.

Pundari stated in Parliament yesterday (Tuesday) that the rainforest is an asset for adaptation as well as mitigation and PNG is one of the only three countries in the world that has a regulatory framework.

He said this allows us to be able to deal with the challenges and the opportunities that climate change actually provides us with a window of opportunities for our people.

“Our people can be able to voluntarily come forward and be able to surrender land, to be able to measure carbon stock and be able to get the assistance so it can be traded.

“But I don’t think this is a good form of mitigation because at the end of the day, there are polluters who would want to continue to pollute and pay us money to continue to produce that carbon sink,” he said.

He added that this does not directly address the root cause of greenhouse gas emissions.

Pundari said direct mitigation will have to be the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and investment in green technology to be able to help us secure our planet.

A photovoltaic system, also solar PV power system, or PV system, is a power system designed to supply usable solar power by means of photovoltaics.

“It consists of an arrangement of several components, including solar panels to absorb and convert sunlight into electricity, a solar inverter to change the electric current from DC to AC, as well as mounting, cabling and other electrical accessories to set up a working system,” states the Wikipedia.
