Public servants must have NID cards to get entitlements: Abel

Public servants with National Identification Card (NID) will be the only staff to be paid entitlements starting in the first quarter of 2016.

This is the move undertaken by the government to reduce ‘ghost names’ in the payment system.

In his speech on Tuesday during the Budget lock-up session at the National Parliament, National Planning Minister Charles Abel said with the 2016 National Budget allocation, every employee in government departments must be registered and have a national ID as a requirement.

He said this will qualify government employees to be on payroll and prevent ghost names from appearing on the payroll.

“As we move forward, public servants will be required to have an ID card in order to remain on the government payroll.”

He said the implementation will begin in the National Capital District and then will move to other centres.

He said there were many ‘ghost names’ in the payroll system and the government had been spending a lot of money on them.
