Public reminded to seek help at violence support hotline

People affected by the issue of family and sexual violence are reminded to seek help available through the 1-Tok Kaunselin Helpim Lain.

This follows International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women that will be commemorated on Wednesday 25 November.

The hotline is funded by the New Zealand government’s Aid Programme, United States Agency for International Aid (USAID) and ChildFund Australia.

ChildFund PNG stated that the progress made by the service in combating family and sexual violence had  now been recognised by the Papua New Guinean government.

Minister for Religion, Youth and Community Development Delilah Gore has voiced her support for the toll-free hotline.

“The impact it has made since launching on August 20 reflects the importance of providing assistance to men, women and children who are affected by this issue.”

One of the more enduring stories to come out of the program was the journey of guest speaker Taina Gebai, a once violent man who has since changed his ways.

He thinks it is important that people on both sides of the relationship use the free counselling service to get the help they need to stop the violence in their home.

The free number to call is 71508000 to receive counselling and support for family and sexual violence issues.

Referrals are made to an extensive range of support services including the police, medical help, legal assistance, safe houses, counselling services, family support centres and child welfare services.
