Psychological First Aid important for traumatised person: Doctor

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is the first line of defence to help traumatised person says a psychiatrist.

The Director of Medical Services for Laloki Psychiatric Hospital Dr Ludwig Nanawar made this comment today to commemorate World Mental Health Day, which is marked on October 10 each year.

He said the World Mental Health Day (WMHD) is an annual event which aims to raise awareness of mental health issues across the globe and also mobilize efforts in support of mental health.

“Each year the World Federation for Mental Health coins a theme for the WMHD. This year's theme is Psychological First Aid (PFA) For All,” Dr Nanawar said.

“PFA is important first line psychological support for people affected by crisis events.

“Crisis events can range from large scale events such as natural disasters, war and terrorist attacks, disease outbreaks, large scale displacement of people and communities or individual events such as accidents, robbery or mugging and assault.

“PFA if provided in a timely manner can prevent or minimise psychosocial distress suffered by victims of crisis events. PFA need not be provided by mental health professionals only.

“In short PFA is any humane, supportive and practical assistance offered to fellow human beings who suffered a serious stressor.”
