PPL begins 2017 apprentice and trainee enrolment process

PNG Power Ltd (PPL) conducted the first entry test today for successful young applicants who would enter PPL’s apprenticeship and traineeship programs in 2017.

A total of 991 successful applicants around the country sat for their entry tests in the different trades of electrical fitter, diesel mechanic, machine fitter machinist, lines, power station operator, meter technician and electrical inspector. Applicants in other centres did their tests at the respective PPL offices.

At the PPL Training College at Hohola, Port Moresby, 531 young men and women turned up early this morning to do their tests with the hope to join the workforce sometimes in the future.

Among the male folks, five (5) successful young ladies sat for their entry test in electrical fitter at the PPL Training College.

One of them, Ms Hedwick Patia, a graduate of Port Moresby Technical College said PPL was a big company and was the right environment for her t raining and to pursue her career in the electricity industry.

“PNG Power is a world recognized company and it’s our own local company. It offers a better apprenticeship program and I wish to be trained here and get the skills I need to contribute to the company’s growth and deliver electricity service to customers,” Hedwich said.

The first intake was in October 2015. Successful young applicants went through this same process and are now out in the respective PPL centres undergoing training.

This is the second intake and the successful candidates who pass this entry test will go through an interview process, medical examination and enter the apprenticeship and traineeship programs in 2017.

PPL is in a drive to train and maintain a robust workforce that will take the company forward and ensure there is no skill gap when the aging workforce exit the company.

The apprenticeship (4 years) and traineeship (2 years) programs were revived in 2015.

Trades or courses taught at the PPL Training College under these programs include electrical fitting, diesel mechanic, machine fitter machinist, lines, power station operation, and PPL ensures that quality hands-on training is given to the trainees.
