PNGRNRL condemns Digicel Cup challenge violence

The PNGNRL has condemned last week’s Digicel Cup violence that resulted in the death of an innocent man.

“We sincerely apologise and were saddened to hear of the loss of a young life.

“The person did not even go to watch the game but became a victim of the senseless and irresponsible behaviour of a few individuals,” said PNGNRL Chairman, Sudhir Guru.

Guru said Digicel has been sponsoring the Digicel Cup since 2011 which has seen over 600 rugby league games played nationwide.

“The overall experience over the years has been positive, though there have been some ugly incidences

“Rugby league has changed in the last 2-3 years with the introduction of the SP Hunters whose players come from the Digicel Cup,” said Guru.

Guru added that through the Digicel Cup, the PNGNRL and its sponsors have put in K15-18 million into rugby league.

“To bring rugby league to the next level, it is the responsibility of the community and supporters to appreciate the efforts and support of the PNGNRL and nits associates who continue to support rugby league in these tough economic times,” said Guru.
