PNG students invited to compete for US scholarship

High school students in Papua New Guinea are encouraged to participate in a global contest for innovative ideas on sustainable development to win scholarships.

This is a competition for students all over the world including PNG and is an initiative of the United Nations (UN) and Seton Hall University in the United States.

Finalists with the best ideas will win cash prizes and partial scholarships to attend Seton Hall University, a private Catholic school in South Orange, New Jersey.

The cash prize assists with the launching of the idea or creating awareness about SDGs.

Students are invited to submit 300-500 word statement describing an innovative approach to address one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by world leaders, aims to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Proposals can be for a project, campaign, or charity and can be local or global. Focuses can be on the students’ school, surrounding community, any country or region of the world.

The first place winner will receive a $2,500 (K7, 398.64) cash prize and a $10,000 (K29, 594.55) scholarship to attend the University.

The second place winner will receive a $1,000 (K2, 959.46) cash prize plus a $6,000 (K17, 756.73) scholarship. The other finalists will each receive a $4,000 (K11, 837.82).

Additional financial support to attend the University could be provided upon meeting certain conditions.

UN Resident Coordinator in PNG Roy Trivedy encourages students in PNG to take on the challenge as it offers a fantastic opportunity to proactively think about how best they can raise awareness and support achieving SDGs.
