PNG Power eyes renewable energy

PNG Power Ltd’s long term aim is to move away from the dependence on fuel in generating electricity for the country.

That is the message from PPL chief executive officer Chris Bais when speaking at the opening of the company’s 2016 Managers Conference in Port Moresby.

The theme of the conference is “Overcoming Business Challengers” and will end on Friday.

Bais said the state-owned electricity supplier has many challengers and this is an opportunity for managers in the provinces to provide their experiences to help company forward.

The last managers’ conference was held 10 years ago.

Bais said the company had a big challenge to meet the Government expectation to provide an affordable and reliable electricity supply to 70 per cent of the population by 2030.

He added that looking at renewable energies and partnering with the private sector is a way forward for the company.

Most of  the electricity supplied by PPL is generated from fuel generation which affects the balance sheet for the company since its inception in 1963.

“Improving and maintaining supply reliability, reduce system losses by increasing hydro generation, aggressively looking at gas fire generation, to reduce thermal cost is the area the company is look at,”Bais said.
