PNG enjoys bilateral ties with countries

Papua New Guinea have enjoyed close, friendly and constructive relations with many countries and international organisations, including the immediate neighbourhood.

Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato when giving his ministerial statement in Parliament today on the progress and challenges in the past years in growing important nations for the country said the past has been an exceptionally busy and productive period for growing vital connections with other countries.

“While we have been busy growing our country’s international connections, we have not for a moment taken our eyes off the vital duty of safeguarding PNG’s core national interest,” says Pato.

“But relationships do not grow on their own.

“Government must make right choices in deciding with whom and how to engage. It must invest the time, energy and resources required to develop positive and mutually beneficial relations that support PNG’s national interest.”

Pato told Parliament that the relationship PNG has with other countries was robust and needed the Government support to continue its friendship.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Don Polye commended Pato for a job well done and marketing PNG to other countries.

However, he called on the Government to really look at helping the people of this nation first rather than looking abroad.
