PNG designer stuns fashion lovers with outfits

Natasha Tamanabae is an expert at amazing people with her fashion creativity.

Last Saturday, BAIWA introduced a fresh look to PNG’s fashion industry, on the PNG Fashion Week Runway.

And it was indeed a secret worth waiting for, as owner and founder Natasha kept saying: “There will be a surprise.”

Moving outside the usual heavy traditional tapa design inspired pieces, the BAIWA on the Runway was more in-tune to the modern and young taste.

In collaboration with Anthony Wesley Evenett (Wesevo), the lass from Popondetta introduced funky-fresh outfits from bright, free hand-sprayed material.

It was described by some close followers of BAIWA as a fusion explosion of art and fashion when the 12 pieces came onto the Runway.

This explains why the BAIWA, introduced only very recently, has quickly gained popularity the world over.

Her signature product – the BAIWA shoes – have been shipped to 12 different countries, including Paris, India, South Korea, South America and Hawaii, only within two months of being introduced.

Her secret, no doubt, lies in creativity.

“It’s just how you put things together, your creativity and everything behind it,” she had said during the workshop organised by the PNG Fashion Week last week.

As a Binandere woman from Popondetta, Natasha is all about confidence, which is what her brand – BAIWA – stands for.

“Where I come from, women are always seen as second best. The only time a woman is recognised is when she performs the Baiwa. That’s why I decided to name my brand BAIWA.”

To her, it’s about being unique and confident, proud of being a woman and wearing something, not only because it makes you look good, but because it means something.
