PNG Barras miss to qualify for World T20

PNG Barramundis have missed qualifying for the ICC World T20 in India next year.

They were defeated by Afghanistan by six wickets overnight in Ireland.

Barras had wasted their last realistic chance to make a world event this decade with the ICC World Twenty20 now being played every four years.

Afghanistan restricted PNG to 127 for 6 after PNG elected to bat first.

PNG’s top batsman Lega Siaka mustered just 59 runs at 9.83 apiece this tournament.

Charles Amini glided his way to a run-a-ball 37 not out, and Norman Vanua, whose four sixes had sealed the two-wicket win over Ireland, showcased his power again to hammer 22 in ten balls.

Afghanistan’s front-line bowlers of Mohammad Nabi, Dawlat Zadran and Shapoor Zadran turned up the heat when it really mattered and made PNG’s batsmen suffer early.

Shapoor took two wickets, including the crucial one of Tony Ura and conceded just nine runs off his four overs as PNG stumbled to 37-4 and 55-5.

While a target of 128 was never likely to worry a team with Afghanistan’s quality, Nawroz Mangal and captain Asghar Stanakzai consolidated for the Afghans given the low run-rate required.

Mangal carried his bat and finished unbeaten on 65 off 56 balls as he shepherded his team towards qualification with six wickets and 10 balls to spare.

Afghanistan and Oman claimed the final two places at next year’s ICC World Twenty20.

Omanis were too strong for Namibia winning by five wickets to reach its first-ever ICC World Twenty20.
