PM O’Neill convey’s best wishes to ‘Our Olympians’

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill has wished Papua New Guinea’s Olympians good fortune as they prepare to complete at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

Prime Minister O’Neill said representing Papua New Guinea at the Olympic level is a tremendous honour and all athletes will carry the pride of the nation with them.

"Go for gold in Rio, but even if you don’t win a medal, so long as you do your best your country will be proud.

“You carry the goodwill of the nation with you, and are role models for our youth.

“It is a great honour you have representing your country and we know that you will serve us proud.

“While at the Olympics you will be ambassadors for Papua New Guinea.

“Wear our national colours with pride and showcase your talent and skills to the world.

“I urge all Papua New Guineans to get behind our team and gather in your homes and communities to watch our athletes compete.”

The Prime Minister said the Government will continue to extend the highest level of support to the development of sports throughout the nation.

“Our Government is committed to the development of our athletes, from the grassroots through to the elite level.

“We are encouraging our young people to get involved with sports at a district level from an early age.

“This is best for the physical growth of our young people, and encourages their social development.

“Through this process we will also identify and assist our future athletes who will compete for their provinces and the nation.”
