Plans on to stage world surfing event

Plans are now underway to stage the inaugural Surfing Association PNG-World Surf League (WSL) surf tour championship in January 2017 at Tupira in Madang Province.

SAPNG has been invited to meet with the WSL executives in Australia this year to discuss in more detail in planning the event.

SAPNG president Andrew Abel says the meeting is an opportunity to articulate what SAPNG has done and achieved over the last 29 years.

Abel said this is an opportunity to express what surfing has achieved in promoting and developing surfing and surf tourism in partnership with the traditional resource custodians.

This is based on the home grown model and policies that SAPNG has created which will form the foundation of the inaugural event.

About 60 athletes are expected to take part in this world event and 20 WSL staff including the local and international media.
