Piggery farmer’s dream for a butchery

A piggery farmer in the Lower Mendi Local Level Government area plans to set up a butchery in Mendi, the provincial capital of Southern Highlands Province.

The Jay Zero Farm piggery project owner, Pastor James Dima, said currently piglets are sold at K500 to K600 each.

This is to help them buy feed and save enough money to set up a feed mill in a nearby location.

Pr Dima’s plan is that once the feed mill is established within the area, it will reduce the cost of buying feed from elsewhere and freight cost.

He said the next step would be to build a butchery to supply the pork demands of Mendi town, surrounding areas and others.

Started eight years ago, the piggery has expanded from local bush material to a permanent building.

In August 2015, Imbonggu MP Francis Awesa gave K50,000 to help set up the permanent building.

Pr Dima explained with the help of this money and his own funds, the new building was built.

"We’re grateful of the monetary help from our member, which together with our own funds of up to K98,000, this new permanent building was built,” he said.

Pr Dima said when people buy piglets, they are taught how to treat them against worms.

“It is important that the people are taught how to treat the piglets against worms,” he explained.

Located along the Mendi-Tari and Mendi-Poroma Highway, the piggery project is at Tepe and has many piglets to sell.
