Opposition to seek orders against government on VONC

The Opposition has taken out an application through their lawyer Loani Henao to challenge the government's decision to adjourn parliament to March 22, 2016.

Leader Don Polye announced today the government adjourned parliament when there was a notice for a motion of no confidence in the Prime Minister with the speaker and the parliamentary privileges committee to deliberate on.

He said it is the view of the opposition that the Constitutional provision for the motion of no confidence in the prime minister was sabotaged by the prime minister and his government.

Polye said the government, through the permanent parliamentary committee on private business, illegally stopped the process.

He said the committee does not have the power to reject the motion under section 145 of the Constitution to determine the merits of a motion of vote of no confidence against the prime minister.

"The committee is tasked to look at the technical aspect of the motion and determine if it meets the requirements prescribed under section 145."

Parliament should have determined this when the opportunity arose after seven days.

Polye also said when parliament had a budget, that conventionally should have been given 7 days to be debated before passage.

He adds he filed the motion of no confidence on November 3rd, the day the budget was handed down but the process was hijacked and sabotaged by the government.
