One of PNG’s first MPs dies at 86

Late Sir Koitaga Mano died peacefully at the age of 86 at his home in Tamal village, Tambul district, Western Highlands Province.

The Late Sir Koitaga was a Member of Parliament in the House of Assembly in 1964. He was one of the first uneducated politicians elected to the House.

In 2008, he was awarded the Queen’s Medal for his contribution to the country.

He hailed from the Komolga Tribe in the Lower Kagual district in Tambul-Nebilyer. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a strong believer of hard work and honesty. He once said corruption is a thing never known before when he was a Representative of the House of Assembly (now known as Member of Parliament).

During his term, he represented Tambul-Nebilyer/Kagua-Pangia/Ialibu/Kandep (all as one electorate at that time) in the Parliament.

He was the translator then became a road foreman and later a Parliamentarian. In all these journeys; he said he was recommended from one to the next based on his simple honesty. He didn’t apply or request for it.

Upholding the principles of honesty with dignity and leaving behind integrity as a legacy is what he left behind for the generations to come.

The challenge is now with Tambul-Nebilyer/WHP and PNG leaders to follow in his footsteps.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
