The Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill CMG MP, has welcomed a peaceful Christmas weekend that saw people around the nation enjoy the festive spirit, but again called on Papua New Guineans to take care on the roads.
"Christmas is a time of love and joy, but in countries right around the world it can also be a time when behaviour can get out of hand,” PM O’Neill said.
“The reports that we have received from police districts suggest that people are enjoying the festive season in the true spirit of Christmas.
“I am confident that we will continue to see people around Papua New Guinea celebrate the festive season with respect for their communities.”
The Prime Minister said as the economy and living conditions continue to improve there are far less incidents of the type that were seen in decades gone by.
“We are seeing a big change in attitudes around our country as our people work together to build a stronger Papua New Guinea.
“As we prepare for New Year’s Eve on Thursday, I am confident we will see the same community spirit continue.
“I commend Commissioner Baki and his commanders for their efforts to maintain community safety during this holiday period.”
The Prime Minister said one of the biggest concerns continues to be road safety, particularly after recent traffic accidents.
“With more roads and highways opening up, more people than ever before are travelling around the country.
“Every death on the roads is one death too many.
“I urge every person travelling on our roads to watch your speed, do not drive tired, and do not drive if you have consumed alcohol.
“Stay alert and arrive safely at your destination.”
